Burnout has been a problem for a long time, but it took on a different meaning in 2020.

We are feeling more depleted than ever before. The vast majority of people I speak to are both physically and emotionally exhausted. Honestly, I can relate. That’s not all though - so many of us are working in difficult conditions, performing duties, and fulfilling roles that do not bring us any meaning, joy, or sense of purpose, even if they once did. On top of that, we are disconnected from our loved ones. Put simply, we are BEYOND burnt out.

Avoiding and addressing burnout is important because we know that it harms us.

Burnout is linked to cognitive impairments such as decreased memory, judgment, decision-making, and focus. In addition, people who are burnt out are more likely to feel panicked, overwhelmed, frustrated, irritable, depressed, and anxious. On a physical level, burnout is associated with symptoms including chest pain, rapid heart rate, and digestive issues. It doesn’t stop there, though. These symptoms ultimately spill into other areas of our life. Put simply: Burnout is not localized to work and often extends to our relationships. As you can see, the potential impact is significant so we need to do what we can to prevent burnout from happening - and manage if it does.

The good news is that there are concrete steps that we can take to both avoid burnout and mitigate it if it strikes. This is what we will be doing throughout this course.

Recognizing Burnout

This module is about recognizing burnout. We need to know what it looks like and how it is showing up in our lives. We will start with a self-assessment to see how well we are taking care of ourselves physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually, and professionally. We will then identify some areas to improve upon and work towards achieving those goals in subsequent modules.

Setting Realistic Expectations

The second module is about setting realistic expectations for ourselves. One of the main causes of burnout is a pressure to perform at a level that meets our expectations and the expectations that we believe others hold for us. We will look at the expectations that we are striving towards. We will also take a look at the things we do and our motivations for engaging in those tasks in order to identify how and when we can start to say ‘yes’ to ourselves.

Having a Healthier Work Environment

This module is about creating a healthier work environment. We will look at practical strategies like scheduling regular breaks. We will also focus on saying ‘no’ when necessary..

Having Healthier Social Relationships

The fourth module is about having healthier relationships. We will start by reflecting on our social well-being. Our aim will be to identify how we can feel more connected to others and recharged by our social relationships. We will also look at how we can preserve our social health by implementing and maintaining appropriate boundaries with the people in our lives.

Embracing Uncertainty

The final module is about shifting our mindset so that we are more comfortable with uncertainty. Fear of the unknown is one of the major drivers of burnout. When we feel out of control in our own lives, we push ourselves to seize and maintain as much control as we can. In some ways, this can reduce anxiety, but it can also lead to burnout and preventing us from learning and experiencing new things.

Plus, you'll also receive a comprehensive workbook to help you learn how to manage your anxiety
and unlock your full potential.

Dr. Sarah will guide you through this workbook, prompting you to complete the relevant exercises at the right times.

You don't have to live a life of physical and mental exhaustion. It is possible to avoid burnout and still live a full life.
