I'm sharing the information I learned as I started to understand and shift my own perfectionism

On the outside, many people think that I “have it all.” I wish they knew that it rarely feels like enough. No matter what I do, no matter what I achieve, my eye has a tendency to go to what could have been better or faster. I also get ahead of myself, formulating the next set of goals without acknowledging or savoring the relative success that I achieved.

Perfectionism, in some ways, has served me well. It has pushed me to work really hard and keep refining things to make them better. I cannot deny that it has helped me accomplish some of the goals that I have set for myself. This is one of the ways in which perfectionism is adaptive.

I wish it ended there, though. Unfortunately, perfectionism prompts me to keep going and keep pushing no matter what. As you can imagine, it is incredibly exhausting and very stressful. My mind races all the time with what I should and must be doing. These thoughts are fueled by the often unrealistic expectations that I put for myself and that I think others have of me.

My perfectionism has triggered me to burn out a few times in my life. The most recent burnout was this year.

I did a lot of introspection and came to the realization that something needs to change. That's when I started researching perfectionism and all its facets. I was able to identify what perfectionism looks like in my life, how it developed and why, the factors that maintain it, and some strategies for managing it.

I'm not "perfectly" managing my perfectionism. I still struggle with expectations and pushing myself to achieve. At the same time, I am much more balanced and gentler with myself. I have noticed that my stress levels have decreased and I am generally more relaxed. I know there are so many people out there like me and so I wanted to put this course together to reach you.

Course and Instructor Orientation

This is the first module is an orientation to the course and an introduction to me, as a psychologist and fellow perfectionist. The point is for you to clearly understand what we will be covering and to mentally prepare for it. I will be sharing my story with you shortly. As I do this, I want you to reflect on your own story. Then, we will talk about setting an intention for this course.

Perfectionism in Your Life

Perfectionism is actually quite poorly understood. Many people think that a perfectionist is someone who has high standards. Yes, that’s a part of it but it is so much more than that. You will also learn about the three different types of perfectionism: self-oriented perfectionism, other-oriented perfectionism, and socially-prescribed perfectionism. Once you get the basics of perfectionism, you will reflect on how perfectionism shows up in your life. You’ll also have the chance to review an assessment of perfectionism and opt into a professional one, should you choose to do so.

Sources of Your Perfectionism

We will look at some of the major contributors to perfectionism. These include individual characteristics as well as social, familial, and cultural factors. You’ll have the chance to identify and reflect on how these factors have affected you over time.

Why Your Perfectionism Persists

This is a really important module because it’s about gaining insight into why our tendencies have persisted over time. This is the first step towards making changes. We will first review a model of perfectionism and then you will practice identifying how it plays out in your own life. We will talk about keeping the “good bits” and moving away from the “bad bits” of perfectionism. The point is for you to see that letting go doesn’t mean you’re accepting mediocrity.

Managing Your Perfectionism

In this lesson, we will take a look at some of the practical tools and techniques that we can use to rewire and change all of the factors that we identified previously. This includes challenging unhelpful thoughts, practicing self-compassion, and recognizing our strengths.

Plus, you'll also receive a comprehensive workbook to help you learn how to manage your anxiety

Dr. Sarah will guide you through this workbook, prompting you to complete the relevant exercises at the right times.

Managing your perfectionism is 100% attainable. Through this course, I'll show you how.
